Publishing our own - growing our own

Indie publishing - not using the big publishing houses - seems similar to me to growing your own food and not buying from industrial food producers, or seeds from the big seed companies. Big seed companies choose what we grow (eliminating a lot of genetic material along the way) and big publishers choose what we read (eliminating all but the most popular subjects - vampires?). I LOVE it that the playing field is being leveled, thanks to technology and open communications. If you compare indie (like Kindle-only) Young Adult titles with large-publisher titles, you'll see what I mean.
