A Rending Clash of Worlds: The Series, by Dr. John S Lewis

A Rending Clash of Worlds Series

In 1871, in this story, an asteroid is discovered that is not where it was expected to be, namely in the Asteroid Belt. Instead, it is in an Earth-crossing orbit. Such a possibility has never been suspected.

And now a young science major at Princeton College has been recruited to help track it next time it's in an orbit favorable for observation.

The asteroid, named Thanatos (classicists will know why), is found to be in an orbit that threatens Earth, and scientists must learn new science, engineers must develop new tools, and statesmen must achieve new levels of international cooperation to save Earth from certain destruction.

John S Lewis, the author of the three volumes of A Rending Clash of Worlds, is himself a space scientist, former professor of planetary sciences and an expert on our solar system, from MIT and the University of Arizona, and more recently the Chief Scientist at Deep Space Industries, Inc.

A Rending Clash of Worlds, the series, is historical science fiction. What happens could have happened. Clash shows the speeding up of science and technologies in the face of imminent annihilation. Every step of the development of the technologies of salvation actually happened, but on a different time scale.

With this story we see how these developments were forced on the humanity of that day. We also see the role of diplomacy, statesmanship, and cooperation as being a critical component.

If you like alternate histories, I think you'll really enjoy the Clash series.
